How Does Location Visibility Work on the Map?

Updated

Currently's map displays activity around you rather than precise locations. You maintain complete control over visibility through four options:

  • Public — shows general area to nearby users
  • Close Friends — visible only to trusted contacts
  • Private — you remain hidden while viewing others
  • Ghost Mode — complete invisibility

When Location Appears

Location appears on the map exclusively when you post a Moment with location enabled and your visibility settings permit it. The platform emphasizes that "No Moment = no map visibility."

Independence from Other Privacy

Importantly, map privacy settings operate independently from feed and profile visibility, meaning adjustments to map settings don't affect Moment visibility elsewhere.

No Impact on Rewards

Map visibility has no bearing on rewards — you can earn coins and maintain streaks while remaining invisible.

Changing Settings

Users can change visibility settings at any time, with changes taking effect immediately on future Moments while past Moments retain their original visibility settings.

Common Misconceptions

The platform clarifies:

  • The map shows activity-based visibility rather than continuous tracking
  • Ghost Mode doesn't block rewards
  • "Public map shows [only] general area," not exact locations
