Creating a Moment

Opening the camera

Updated

Where to find the post button.

The + button

Currently is built around real-time posting. The button to capture a new moment is always one tap away.

Three places to start

  1. Bottom navigation — tap the green + button in the bottom navigation bar (it's the rightmost icon).
  2. Profile screen — tap the camera icon at the top of your profile.
  3. Live Map — tap the + button on the map to post a moment with your current location pre-tagged.

First time you open the camera

If this is your first time posting, your phone will ask for Camera permission and Photos permission. Tap Allow for both — you need them to capture and pick photos.

Permissions required. Currently is camera-first. Without camera or photos permission, you can't post moments. To turn them on later, go to your phone's Settings → Currently → Permissions.

What you'll see

The camera opens full-screen with:

  • Activity tag at the top (pre-filled if you came from a Live Map pin or plan, otherwise empty)
  • Live preview of your camera
  • Flash icon on the bottom-left
  • Big white capture button in the centre
  • Flip camera icon on the bottom-right
  • PHOTO / VIDEO toggle below the capture button
  • Down-arrow at the top to close and return

FAQs — Opening the camera

Q. Why does the camera button say 'Drinking - Coffee' even though I haven't started?

A. If you came from a context that already has an activity (like opening the camera from a place page or a friend's similar moment), Currently pre-fills the activity tag for you. You can tap it to change.

Q. My camera is just black. What's wrong?

A. Either Currently doesn't have camera permission (check Settings → Currently → Camera), or another app is using the camera. Close the camera in any other app and try again.

Q. How do I close the camera without posting?

A. Tap the down-arrow at the top of the camera screen, or use your phone's back button. Anything you've captured is discarded — no draft is saved.

Q. Can I open the camera from a notification?

A. If a friend invites you to a plan, tapping that notification can take you to a pre-filled camera. Otherwise, notifications open their respective screens (chat, profile, etc.) — not the camera directly.
