The universal search bar

Updated

One search field that finds people, hashtags, places, activities, and moments — all at once.

Open the universal search

  1. From any tab in the Search hub, tap the search icon at the top-right.
  2. Or in the People tab, tap the search field directly.
  3. A full-screen search opens with a single field at the top: Search.

What the search bar finds

Currently's universal search looks across many categories at once. Type any text and you'll see results split into sections:

SectionWhat appears
ActivityActivities matching your text (e.g., type Attending → see Attending - Wedding, Attending - Meeting, Attending - a birthday party)
HashtagHashtags people have used. Each shows how many moments use it (e.g., # sompura — Use • 2 Moments) and a Post button
FriendsPeople you already follow whose names match
Find FriendsPeople you might know — same as the People tab section
PlacesMap pins for matching places (e.g., search Jay bhavaniJay bhavani — 2 KM • Prahlad Nagar)
MomentsPublic moments matching your search across captions, hashtags, locations

Discover Activity (before you type)

Before you type anything, the universal search shows two sections:

1. Discover Activity

A row of activity pills with icons — Eating, Working, Traveling, Drinking, Playing. Tap any to instantly filter by that activity (skipping the typing).

2. Suggestions

A list of users Currently thinks you might want to follow. Tap + Follow to follow them directly from search.

Search predictions while you type

As you type, the keyboard shows autocomplete predictions above it. For example, type Jay and you'll see suggestions: Jay, Jayraj, Jayknight. Tap one to autocomplete your search.

Closing the search

Tap the back arrow at the top-left to close the universal search. Tap Clear in the search field to clear what you typed without closing.

One search, many answers. Currently's universal search is designed to feel like Spotlight on macOS or Siri Suggestions on iPhone — type anything, get all relevant results at once. You don't have to choose what kind of thing you're searching for first.

FAQs — Universal search

Q. Why are the search results split into sections?

A. Each section helps you find a different type of result. The same word might be a person's name, a hashtag, AND a place — splitting them into sections lets you spot which one is what you wanted.

Q. If I type a username with @ at the start, do I get just that user?

A. Typing @username narrows the search to people. The other sections (hashtag, places, activity) become less relevant. To search for a hashtag specifically, use #.

Q. Can I search for things in another language?

A. Yes — Currently supports search in English, Hindi (Devanagari), Hinglish, and other Indian languages. The keyboard at the bottom of the search lets you switch input languages.

Q. Why don't I see Moments results when I search a friend's name?

A. Moments are matched against captions, hashtags, and locations — not user names. To find a friend's moments, find them in the Friends section, tap their name, and view their profile.

Q. How recent are the search results?

A. Currently's search index updates in near real-time. Moments posted minutes ago, places newly tagged, and hashtags newly used should all appear within a minute or two.
